Subrata Kar (b. 1962, Myanmar) is an eminent contemporary artist based in Kolkata. He earned his B.V.A. from the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, in 1989, after completing his B.Sc. from the University of Calcutta in 1983. Over his career, he has held several solo exhibitions at prestigious venues such as Tagore Art Gallery, Kolkata (1989, 1992, 1993), Gallery Art Corner, Kolkata (2001), Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai (2003, 2008, 2014), Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata (2017, 2024), and Eye Within Gallery, Kolkata (2022). He has also presented two-man shows at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi (2006, 2016), and three-man shows at Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata (1991, 1992, 2019) and Center Art Gallery, Kolkata (1997).
Subrata has been widely featured in major exhibitions including the Indian Society of Oriental Art, Kolkata (1983–85), All India Annual Art Exhibitions at Academy of Fine Arts and Birla Academy, Kolkata (1983–2001), AIFACS Annual Exhibition, New Delhi (1997, 2001), and international showcases in Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Jaipur, and New Delhi. He has also participated in significant thematic exhibitions such as Young Faces in Contemporary Indian Art (2001, Birla Academy), 25 Years After (2013, Birla Academy), and international art events at Jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur (2014–2022) and Nehru Centre, Mumbai (2022).
He has contributed to numerous art camps and workshops, including those organized by Tata Steel (1992), Aakar (2016), UNESCO at the Indian Museum, Kolkata (2021), and international art workshops in Bishnupur and Diamond Harbour (2024). His artistic excellence has been recognized with several awards, including the Jamini Roy Birth Centenary Award (1987), Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Award (1988), Indian Society of Oriental Art Award (1985), International Airport Authority of India Award (1988), College Art Exhibition Award (1989), and the Tata Steel Excellence Award (1992).
His works are held in prestigious collections including Tata Steel, Birla Academy of Art & Culture, International Airport Authority of India, Reliance, Government of West Bengal, The Village Gallery (New Delhi), and in numerous private and institutional collections across India and abroad.
