Subrata Ghosh (b. 1975) is a contemporary artist based in Kolkata, India. He graduated in Fine Arts from the Indian College of Arts & Draftsmanship, under Rabindra Bharati University (2000), and later earned a B.A. from Calcutta University (2003). With over 25 years of experience in the art world, he has held more than 20 solo exhibitions across India in prestigious venues such as Taj Bengal, Kolkata; Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata; Birla Academy of Art & Culture, Kolkata; Habitat Centre, New Delhi; and Trident Art Walk, Mumbai. He has also participated in over 100 group shows in India and abroad, including exhibitions at Lalit Kala Akademi (New Delhi), ICCR (Kolkata), Nehru Centre (Mumbai), Chitrakala Parishath (Bangalore), and international platforms in Bangladesh.
Subrata’s practice primarily explores mythology through acrylic on canvas, though he also works extensively with oil, watercolor, and portraiture. His art draws inspiration from Indian classical traditions—imbibing the tranquility of Ajanta figuration, the robustness of Gupta sculpture, and elements of classicism fused with romantic decorativeness. His style often combines divine themes with floral motifs, rhythmic patterns, and symbolic figuration, reflecting both timelessness and emotive depth.
As Principal of Sreejan Art Academy and an active member of several art organizations including AIFACS (New Delhi), Salt Lake Sreejan Group of Contemporary Artists, Moner Milon, Pentagon Group, and Bharatiya Charukala Mandir, he has contributed significantly to the art community. He has been recognized with awards such as the Gold Token by Sunil Das at Birla Academy of Art & Culture (2009), and honors from Bharatiya Charukala Mandir (2010) and Moner Milon (2019). Notably, he was selected as a first-tier jury member for the 62nd National Exhibition of Art at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, and his works are part of significant collections, including government and private institutions.
Subrata has also been invited to numerous sponsored exhibitions and international art camps, with his works exhibited across Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Goa, Bangladesh, and beyond. His paintings are held in collections in India and abroad, continuing to inspire through their blend of classical heritage and contemporary expression.
